Film of 2 July:
The Assassin by Hou Hsiao-hsien – 105 mins – Original version in Mandarin, with French and Dutch subtitles
China, 9th century. Secretly trained in martial arts by a nun, Nie Yinniang returns to her family as an assassin tasked with eliminating tyrants. She must kill her cousin Tian Ji’an, a rebel governor and her former fiancé. But upon revealing her identity to him and returning a symbolic jade pendant, she finds herself faced with a dilemma: to carry out her mission or renounce her loyalty to the Order of Assassins.
The Assassin, which features a heroine who refuses to be exploited by a patriarchal order, is the first film in our Taiwanese feminist trilogy.
